| Bon Religion |
Bon was the dominant religion in Tibet prior to Buddhism's rise to prominence in the 7th century. The religion is believed to have been established by Tonpa Shenrab Miwoche around 18,000 years ago in the ancient kingdom of Zhang Zhung in present-day western Tibet.
In Nepal, Dolpa has the highest population of the Bon followers, with ancient traditions and culture still intact. Of the nice Bon monasteries in Dolpa the most important is the 12th century Shamling monastery near Vijer village in upper Dolpa. Other villages and communities that practice Bon in Dolpa are Rigmo, Pugmo, Kaigaun, Hurikot, Chharka and Dho villages on the major trekking routes. |
